I'm kinda sick of poking at this one now. It's fundamentally broken, but at least I don't hate it as much as I did.

Photoshop, at least 20 wasted hours

Varden & Lei'ella from Inverloch.

EDIT: For those of you wondering why I think it's broken, it's the composition and flow. Elements in an image should be arranged so that the eye naturally flows from one point to another, covering the entire image in the process. Here... there's no 'nice' way to visually scan the image, to my mind.

I just adore this picture!! It definitely got me interested in the comic and I just finished reading it and was not disappointed. I love these two :)

I think I know how to fix the flow. Bring Varden's arm forward so that the dagger's angle now points to Lei'ella. Shift Lei'ella's hair so that it flows up and over to point at Varden's hood, as if she is in the process of jumping down onto the roof. This will give the circular flow you're looking for.

I like the composition! Don't think it's "broken" at all. Having the image at an angle is unusual - but definitely attention catching!

The only thing that bothers me is the light in the sky, it's an odd shape -- looks more like there is an ufo descending rather than a natural light effect. I'm wondering if you couldn't put in a moon with some clouds chasing over it - that might also provide the final resting point for the eye, as some other people have mentioned, the sky part of the image is a bit empty.

Hope I'm not repeating what others have said already...

Nice work, anyhow! Don't give up on it! The characters look great, especially the guy. :)

I just finished a three-evening stint reading the whole of Inverloch. Clever story, well plotted, surprising (though sad) ending. What was really obvious, though, was how much your artistic ability improved throughout the novel and the heights it has reached in TPR. Keep going, Sarah, maybe I can get one of your pieces hung in the "Illustrators" gallery of the Detroit Institute of Arts yet!

I don't think it's that broken. My eye hits Varden's face first, then slides off his shoulder to Lei'ella.

That has to do with the initial sketch... why didn't you change it prior to painting it if you thought that?

Anywho i think it is beautifully redndered, i love the colors, how its blue with hints of purple and orange. Also the peoples body languages are very well done and believable.

Eh, the original sketch looked OK to me :S It wasn't until I'd worked on painting and later correcting proportions and poses that it jumped out as feeling wrong.

I see what you mean. the piece doesn't flow visually as well as it could. There could be a few reasons. One is that all of the brightest spots of the piece are centered right near the center: her hair, the knife and the lightness of the sky. The other reason is that all of the warm colors are located almost solely in the bottom right hand of the piece and aren't mirrored anywhere else. a lot of the elements seem to line up too well also, ie the top of the building and the guy's head.

in spite of that though, i do like the lighting a lot, and the gesture of the figures is well thought out. Not your best piece, but still, its good.
