Painting Steps by artsangel Painting Steps by artsangel
This is how I paint things at the present time. This is not how I painted things a month ago :P
I keep changing my techniques, but I do like this method so I thought I would share.

Something too lengthy to mention in the pic: The reason I do the first half of the painting on a small canvas is for two reasons. Firstly, for speed - trying to lay down large textured brushstrokes on a huge canvas causes painful lag. Secondly, when I upscale, I discovered the rough texture turns into an interesting mottled look due to the resize artifacts. This actually looks really nice for skin variation!

Tools: Photoshop CS3, Wacom Intuos3 6x8

Thank you so much for posting this! There are so many other tutorials out there, but given my current art style, this one seems to work well with it. While I certainly wouldn't be able to make anything of such a high skill level as of yet, I can certainly learn with what I can do now. Thanks again!

Thank you for posting this tutorial! You gave some really helpful tips, like working on a small canvas first, I always get so annoyed because I make the project very large at first and the brushes won't scale that far, thanks again! :)

I'm sorry I'm so untechy, I just sketch on watercolor paper and then paint along my sketch. When you say you're using digital, are you actually painting from the computer? Your angel is angelical. How do you go about copyrighting?

I thought this was a traditional painting lesson. I'm actually quite disheartened, it is still a great tutorial though, but I can't say this technique will always make great works, I'm sure a few lessons and some skill would be in order too.

...sob

nice detail on the finished piece though and I'm sure it will be helpful to most, the thing about shading in background tones and doing skin over is a great tip which I may use in the future! Thanks!
