This is how I paint things at the present time. This is not how I painted things a month ago :P
I keep changing my techniques, but I do like this method so I thought I would share.

Something too lengthy to mention in the pic: The reason I do the first half of the painting on a small canvas is for two reasons. Firstly, for speed - trying to lay down large textured brushstrokes on a huge canvas causes painful lag. Secondly, when I upscale, I discovered the rough texture turns into an interesting mottled look due to the resize artifacts. This actually looks really nice for skin variation!

Tools: Photoshop CS3, Wacom Intuos3 6x8

-flail- Ack! I'm so jealous of you. I'd lose it around the fourth step though I use exactly the same 'materials' (tablet etc)...

Such a useful tutorial! If only I could paint as well as you do ^^; Your anatomy is amazing, looks almost life like! (if such bird-people-things existed..)
