Volume 1 Cover by artsangel Volume 1 Cover by artsangel
This is, hopefully, the cover of the printed version of The Phoenix Requiem volume 1.

Hence the big empty space at the top, which is where the words are to go :)

I have no idea how many hours it took. Lost count. Big thanks to all the people who gave me feedback!

This is my first attempt at a critique? D8 But..

This is an amazing work! The setting and postures of the characters fit together perfectly for a novel/book cover. the lighting is spectacular as well. The whole composition leads the eye around the painting from the girl's body to her face, then to the man which seems to be the 2nd focal point, to observe what she's looking at.
Her expression is very gripping as well.

If I do have crits though~ This composition seems to be of the more mysterious type, and makes the audience wonder who the man is, what are those spirits grabbing around him, what is the woman thinking, what relationship does she have with the man, etc. But it seems to me that for this kind of setting, the colors throughout the picture are too vibrant. The more intense colors might be used on the man and the woman's face, but then the building in the background and her fur jacket might be greyed down and shaded so that there is less contrast to catch the eye. Then there is a more mysterious and somewhat creepy outlook to match the "story" that onlookers think of.

I don't draw people well, so the colors and shading are my only critique. Other than those tiny things, this entire painting is incredibly well done!! Fantastic job!

Hi, I just wanted to say I'm impressed with how many pages you can get done. I still have to sit down and read the whole novel but I opened pages at random and I think your stuff is awesome. Wow, only 4-5 hours on each page is what I think you said in your faq.... I'm working on my own Web comic but it is taking me a lot longer than 4-5 hours per page...I'm afraid to time myself I'm so turtle slow.

Anyways, keep up the fantastic work!

I am exceedingly excited at the prospect of this being a printed work! Your comic is beautiful and wonderfully written (and I have to admit that I am a little bit in love with Jonas Faulkner).

This cover is gorgeous, and fits very well.

Ooh, the spirits were a nice subtle touch. One of those "when you see it" things. <3 Only nitpicks are that it's not as smooth as your usual work, and the highlights on her hair don't seem quite right. (There seems to be very little circular shape to her head where the hair is)

This image is over a year old now, what 'usual work' are comparing it to? Of course it's not going to be as good as most of what I've done since :)

The one critique I can think of is that the snowflakes look too round. Perhaps if you gave them a rougher, more ragged shape? They look like they were just thrown in as an afterthought, especially compared to the snow on the ground and in Anya's hair.

Other than that, it's beautiful.

I agree with ~rogueglitter; book covers, especially comic book/graphic novel covers, need to be brighter and more eye-catching than you would think. While this picture is fine for online gallery display, you'll definitely want a version with upped saturation for printing. Joshua Middleton explains it much better in his post here [link]

Anyway, this is gorgeous work! I look forward to the day when "Phoenix Requiem" finds its way to print :)

I would have to disagree on the critique about the contrast on the cover. You WANT your cover to be eye catching! Covers should be something that draws someone in, instead of being dulled down for them to easily pass over. You don't want to blend in. As for the colors, I like them as well. It's a night shot, and I think the purples in Anya's dress add to the hints at a romantic undertone in the story. Also, it contrasts nicely with the light of the lamp. Also the negative space created with the white snow is nice. Overall, I think it's defiantly compelling piece, perfect for the first cover.

Beautiful art as usual. How can you be so mean to Jonas in the comic? Just make Anya kiss him already. The poor boy deserves a break :)
Also, is it just me, or does Anya's hair magically get shorter somewhere around Chapter Three? I know I'm not going crazy... Her hair is really long for the first few chapters, but it gets much shorter after. What's up with that?

Ever heard of a haircut? :p

Anya gets a haircut between winter and spring. Robyn's hair grows a bit longer and he has it in a ponytail for a while before evenually getting it cut during summer. Petria is trying to grow her hair out longer so hers gradually grows. It's little touches like that which makes characters more believable, yanno?
