Can someone explain this Kiriban thing to me? I think I have a rough idea, but I figure at least one of you out there would know exactly what it's all about
And following on from the advice below: often, people will *just* miss the kiriban number (a random visitor will load the page just then, for example) or - especially if they have a lot of visitors - more than one person will catch it. I think I've seen up to four. It is your choice what to do about this - if you want to give them all a prize or just the first person to note you.
(My last one, I set two close together numbers, and got two people for one and none for the other!)
Okay, with one exception, people have already offered up some good explanations of what a kiriban is (although the "inaccurate" explanation was rather amusingly creative ). So what I'm going to do is let you know some of the "facts of life" that go with kiribans.
Announcing a kiriban will increase your pageview traffic by ten fold, easily. You can already see the effect just from people (myself included) going to your profile page to see how many PVs you have. It's a curiosity thing, 'cause most people don't look at the numbers very often. The closer you get to the kiriban number, though, the faster it will go up, because people will visit constantly, trying to catch it, many just camping out there with the refresh button.
Kiribans are a contest and some people get waaaay too serious about them. Some people will also get whiny if they don't feel the prize is sufficient ("What, only a sketch? But I wanted a free painting!"). Most, however, will be extremely grateful for whatever they win and you'll truly make their day. Human nature at its best and worst, I guess.
For something to think about, take a look at this journal by ---> [link] She came up with a different way of doing kiribans after being frustrated by some of those less appreciative contestants, which I think is really awesome. Oh, and her masks are freakin' awesome, so you should check out her gallery anyway.
People started wanting to celebrate reaching nice numbers and on dA will often either give a request to the person who catches the screenshot of it, or some people just make a celebratory picture. The number is set by the person not the viewers so it's totally up to you, don't feel obligated for anything haha!
It's just a way to say "Oh wow, look how far we've gone! Thanks guys! Lets celebrate and continue to the next goal!"
It can be a picture drawn for the person who sends you the screencap of X pageviews, but some artists just say they'll draw something when that number is reached, like a celebratory picture.

That's what it's become at least XD
If I remember correctly, when I did some research on it. The basic definition of it means, in Japanese,
"An important number of significance, usually a round number of some sort."
It's been perverted to mean far more than that by the internet of course.
