I'm starting to think that the llamas are a bad thing. It's enough that people obsess over their page views and watchers, now it seems they are going to obsess over how many llamas they can collect.
Really, it just makes things competitive. Why do things need to be competitive? The only person an artist should compete with is themselves. One should never actually strive to become better than somebody else.

Eh, it's new. Maybe the novelty will die down :)

I must say, I do rather like my little super albino llama though.

I think the llamas are mostly harmless. It's much better to exchange llamas that don't mean anything except for a little joy than to exchange favourites which should be deserved.
And they're cute. :XD:

I HATE llamas :O_o: but for personal reasons, seeing as how one spit on the back of my head bcaz I had food (and the sign read "DON'T FEED THE LLAMAS") and my grandparents got mad at me when I started freaking out about llama spit all over my head and made me wipe it off with napkins in the bathroom and stop crying... I was like 12, 11? maybe 13? Lol So I haven't liked llamas for a while :XD: They're EVIL!!!! :O_o:

well I feel i have something to say...
the llamas are just a part of the whole deviant thing.
its been WHILE that deviant has been MOSTLY about popularity...

people do give favorites to get pageviews, people do comment jsut to get a comment back...
its not the llamas doing this. its the whole deviant. on the other hand, its hard to get comments that say more than "omg this looks amazing"... you know real critique...

I realised quite a while ago (with great sadness) that deviantArt appears to be useless for critique and improvement, even if you put your work on the Crit section. The only thing people here know how to point out is "I think the arm is too short" or "maybe you should move the eye over". They don't seem to know how to help with colours, composition, values, anything more important than incessant nitpicking.

Places like the forums at ConceptArt.org & CGSociety.org are really the places to go for that. dA is probably just best to show off what you've done to a wider audience :)

i will check them out! thx for the tips!

and BTW...
you are right that dA aint exactly the best place to get help.
but since ive start my art classes at school ive realized something...

I could help others improve, i could give out tips on color and composition, and i just dont. except some special cases. with me it happens that i either think im not that good to help other people... so i figure tha maybe the people who are that good also dont help for other reasons...

even the groups arent working out o in that matter...
what i often see at groups is that everything is expected from the ownwers... maybe whats missing is a way to link people who are about the same skill level... or even to link the people who are more skilled and experienced with the newbies... and finding ways to motivate people to help... like me... i could help...

on the other hand... its hard to find the time to keep on creating art, helping just doesnt fit in the day..

and thats why i tuned to bothering my teachers now instead of expecting comments here.

I think it's only dumb when people, as you said, obsess over it. It's supposed to just be a random nice thing to give to someone, but people have turned it into one of those "if you don't x ammount of these given to you you're a loser" chain-mail things...

I even saw somebody holding a contest with prizes. To be in the draw to win, you just had to give them a llama!

Arg. Will people get over the llamas already -_-

... That's kind of funny. XD

People will probably get bored with them soon.

The Llama badge isn't really a mark of achivement or anything.
It was just a goofy thing to give to a friend. I suppose it could turn into a popularity contest, but that's not even valid cause people DO just give them to get them.
